Cartwright will shortly be launching its latest recruitment drive to offer another 30 young people the chance to train on its award-winning apprenticeship scheme.
One of the UK’s leading manufacturer of trailers, the company has a reputation for innovation and designs and builds all vehicles at its 38-acre base in Altrincham.
Apprentices learn about all sides of the business during their two-year apprenticeship and have a chance to progress afterwards to gain further qualifications.
The scheme, which started in 2012, was the brainchild of Cartwright Chairman Peter Cartwright who wanted to keep a stream of talent flowing into the engineering sector and which has been at the core of the continuing Cartwright success story.
Named last year in Centrica’s top 100 Apprenticeship employers, Cartwright also scooped Apprenticeship of the Year in the Commercial Motor Awards 2017.
One of the first apprentices to join Cartwright was Josh Redfern, who went on to win Apprentice of the Year in the Made in Manchester Awards and in the Commercial Motor Awards. He is now being supported by Cartwright in a part-time engineering degree at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Last year the company took on a record 33 apprentices and launched two new specialised apprenticeships, in painting and in welding.
Cartwright Chairman Peter Cartwright said: “We know there are lots of talented and enthusiastic young people out there who would like to build a good career and engineering offers a rewarding career with challenges and satisfactions.
“We are constantly innovating and investing across our business, for example our new plant for refrigerated trailers, and there will be plenty of opportunities to grow with the company and contribute to a vibrant part of the local economy.
“We would like to hear from young people who want to pursue a career in engineering and they should not be put off if their skills are more practical than academic – we hold our own selection process that includes practical aptitude tests.”
During National Apprenticeship Week (5th-9th March) the company was among those showcasing opportunities at the Open Day organised by SETA Training and Advisory Services in Stockport on Wednesday, March 7th.
Cartwright will launch its apprenticeship recruitment drive officially on April 9th.
Cartwright’s two-year apprenticeships are tailored to the company’s requirements and are designed to encourage school and college leavers to develop a range of both work and social skills, including working in a team, to lay the foundations for a future career in engineering.
Apprentices are rotated around each of the disciplines in Cartwright’s factory and are mentored under a buddy system in which they are paired up with an experienced member of staff. They are also assigned a 2nd/3rd year apprentice as a mentor they can approach for help.
After their apprenticeship and dependent on performance and on their selected area of speciality, there is an opportunity to study for higher qualifications.
Cartwright is an expanding company with a Group turnover exceeding £140 million and household name customers including Asda, Royal Mail, Pets at Home and Poundworld.
